These homemade Mexican churros are crunchy on the outside and soft on the inside. They are simply delicious dusted with a cinnamon and cardamom sugar mix and served with a sinfully dark chocolate sauce.

  • 120ml water
  • 2 1/2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 1 tablespoon caster sugar
  • 1/2 tablespoon salt
  • 60g plain flour
  • 350ml grapeseed oil for frying, or as needed
  • Dark chocolate sauce
  • 4 tablespoons double cream
  • 60g dark chocolate
  • 2 tablespoons chocolate-hazelnut spread (such as Nutella®)
  • 1 tablespoon unsalted butter
  • 1 tablespoon caster sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground coffee beans (optional)
  • Cinnamon-cardamom sugar mix
  • 8 cardamom pods, seeded and hulls discarded (optional)
  • 1 (5cm) cinnamon stick
  • 1 star anise pod (optional)
  • 100g caster sugar

  1. Bring water to the boil in a medium-sized pot. Add vegetable oil, sugar and salt. Stir to combine. Add flour and turn off heat. Stir continuously and vigorously with a wooden spoon until dough comes together in a ball and follows your spoon around the pan, 1 to 2 minutes. Set aside to cool when dough feels firm and supple.
  2. Heat grapeseed oil in a medium-sized pot over medium heat.
  3. While oil heats, combine cream, dark chocolate, chocolate-hazelnut spread, butter, sugar and ground coffee in a pan set over lowest heat. Stir often to ensure even melting, 3 to 5 minutes.
  4. Grease the inside of a piping bag fitted with a star tip. Insert dough and squeeze it all the way to the bottom of the bag.
  5. Insert the handle of a wooden spoon into the oil heating in the pot; if it bubbles steadily, the oil is ready. Carefully squeeze dough out of the bag directly into the hot oil, cutting it off at 15cm lengths. You can also pipe lengths of dough onto baking parchment and transfer them to the oil by hand. Do not crowd the pot.
  6. Fry churros, turning every minute, for 2 to 3 minutes total. Transfer fried churros to a dish lined with kitchen roll.
  7. Place cardamom seeds, cinnamon stick and star anise in a spice grinder and blend to a fine powder. Transfer to a wide dish and add sugar. Mix well to combine.
  8. Toss warm churros into the cinnamon-cardamom sugar. Serve alongside a mug of the chocolate sauce for dipping.

Easy Homemade Churros

You can find a type of fried dough in nearly every cuisine and one of our favorites is the Spanish churro. Many countries have adopted the churro since it's creation and our version more closely resembles the Mexican version. The doughs are very similar, but the churros you find in Spain will typically be coated in sugar whereas the ones in Mexico will be coated in cinnamon and sugar. Since we love the cinnamon and sugar combo we went that route.

We don't often feel like breaking out all of our oil to fry things. But when you have an easy churro recipe this delicious, it's absolutely worth it. They only take a few minutes to fry and will actually still taste good at room temp, making them a great party dessert!

We're also slightly obsessed with the chocolate dipping sauce&mdashso be sure to make that, too! If you want to stick with the churro theme for the day, start by making Churro French Toast.

Recipe Summary

Place sugar, flour, and cocoa powder into a bowl. Whisk together to remove lumps.

Heat milk, butter, and vanilla extract in a saucepan over medium heat until butter melts.

Whisk dry ingredients into the milk mixture a little at a time. Increase heat to medium-high until mixture comes to a simmer. Cook, stirring constantly, for 6 minutes. After 6 minutes, turn off heat. Whisk in a pinch of salt.

Pour hot over ice cream or store in airtight containers in the refrigerator.


Churros with Mexican Chocolate Sauce

It’s hard to believe May is just a couple days away. Where has all this time gone?! I guess when you’re stuck indoors for the last year, you almost loose a sense of time. But hopefully that will change soon with more and more people getting vaccinated. And just in time for Cinco de Mayo celebrations!

If you decide to have a few people over to celebrate, you’ve got to make these Churros with Mexican Chocolate Sauce for dessert. I have yet to find someone who doesn’t go crazy for these, with their chewy centers and crispy edges. And that chocolate sauce? It’s so rich and creamy and lightly spiced with cinnamon and chili powder that you can’t help but dip each churro in them.

Without further ado, here are my Churros with Mexican Chocolate Sauce!

Churro Dough

The churro dough is a wet dough made from butter, flour, and eggs. It’s the same dough used in cream puffs and eclairs, but instead of baking, the dough gets fried.

Once the dough is made, it gets transferred to a piping bag. You can either pipe the dough straight into the oil or onto parchment that is then transferred to the hot oil. I like to shape my dough before frying so I opt for the parchment step.

Frying the Churros

Once the dough it prepped, it’s time to fry them. It’s important to monitor the temperature of the oil so that it’s perfect for frying. Too hot and the dough will burn before cooking through. Too cool and the doughnuts will take too long to fry and become greasy.

After frying, the churros get tossed in granulated sugar.

Making the Mexican Chocolate Sauce

To make the chocolate sauce, it’s just 4 simple ingredients:

The cream gets warmed and then added to the chocolate to melt it slowly. After melting, the ground cinnamon and chili powder are mixed in to give it a very subtle spice.

I’m bringing some street food straight into your kitchen today with these tasty Homemade Churros with Chocolate Sauce. Churros were one of those things I thought I’d never make at home, but as I’ve gotten less terrified of deep-frying, it suddenly didn’t seem so impossible. I’m so glad I gave them a try because they’re impossible to stop eating.

How do you make chocolate sauce?

The chocolate sauce is really simple to make. We’re simply going to melt some dark and milk chocolate with some golden syrup or light corn syrup and double or heavy cream. Stir it frequently just until the chocolate is melted. Then take it off the heat, add a splash of triple sec, give it a good stir, and just let it hang out to cool a bit while you make your churros.

How do you make homemade churros?

The churros are made with a simple dough of flour, baking powder, and olive oil. Then you stir in some boiling water to make a thick, pasty dough. This gets scooped into a piping bag. Use a wide star tip suchas this Wilton 1M to get those classic ridges. We’re going to fry the dough in about 1-inch pieces because we probably just have a pot of oil and not a giant vat. Finally, toss your brown and crispy churros in cinnamon sugar. Dip away in that gorgeous chocolate sauce. They’re ridiculously good.

I am immensely fortunate right now to have my health and have my job. Staying at home hardly feels like a sacrifice. Especially when I get to eat Homemade Churros with Chocolate Sauce. I really hope you make these. It’ll be awesome.


Homemade Churros Ingredients

Every time I eat Churros at a restaurant, I wonder how I can make them at home. I have made it a point to make sure I learn this recipe and now I’m passing it on to you.

Churros are actually a whole lot easier than I ever thought they’d be. Let’s talk about the ingredients needed to make these.

Cold water – I love that you can go to your kitchen sink and get an ingredient to make churros.

Unsalted butter – You may have some unsalted butter sitting right in your fridge. You are going to need it.

Granulated sugar – You cannot make churros without having granulated sugar on hand.

For this recipe, you are also going to need salt, flour, egg, vanilla extract, and a cinnamon and sugar mixture. However, as yummy as these ingredients are, you are also going to make a chocolate sauce to go with these!

Once you are done with the churros and you dip in the chocolate sauce, you are going to be in dessert heaven. If you’ve never known that you can make these right at home in your own kitchen, then you have been missing out.


Churros With Chocolate Sauce Recipe

Homemade churros are a classic favorite fried food!

Ingredients – DOUGH

2 teaspoons cinnamon powder

1 80g slab Aero milk chocolate

Method

  • In a saucepan add water, sugar, oil and salt. Bring to a boil over medium heat.
  • Add in the flour a little at a time as you keep stirring.
  • Mix until it forms a ball.
  • Put your dough into a piping bag. Heat a deep pot with oil.
  • When the oil is hot, squeeze out strips of dough into the hot oil.
  • Deep fry until cooked and golden brown.
  • Drain oil from churros and allow to stand for a few minutes.
  • Mix sugar and cinnamon and evenly coat the churros.
  • METHOD – CHOCOLATE SAUCE
  • Break up chocolate into pieces and leave in a bowl with half a teaspoon of oil and two tablespoons of milk. Put this bowl over a larger bowl of boiling water and allow it to melt.
  • Serve churros with melted chocolate.

Churros with Chocolate-Caramel Sauce

In just 30 minutes, you can make this Spanish-inspired dessert from scratch.

unsalted butter, cut into pieces

heavy cream, at room temperature

plus 1/2 cup granulated sugar

  1. In a small pot, use a fork to combine sugar and 2 tablespoons water to form wet sand. Cook on medium, swirling pot as necessary, until amber in color, 4 to 5 minutes. Remove from heat and whisk in butter (it will sputter), then whisk in heavy cream, cocoa powder, and salt to dissolve.
  2. Add chocolate and let sit 3 minutes, then stir until melted and smooth (if desired, use an immersion blender to get it extra-smooth and silky).
  1. In a medium saucepan, cook cinnamon stick on medium until fragrant, about 2 minutes. Add 1 cup water, olive oil, 1 tablespoon sugar, and salt and bring to a boil. Discard cinnamon stick, then remove from heat, quickly stir in flour with a wooden spoon, and let sit.
  2. Heat vegetable oil in a medium saucepan on medium to 350°F on a candy thermometer. Meanwhile, transfer hot churro batter to a large bowl. Using an electric mixer on low, beat 1 minute to cool slightly. Beat in egg (dough will be smooth and shiny). Transfer batter to a pastry bag fitted with a large star tip. Working in 4 batches, squeeze 3- to 4-inch lengths of batter into oil, using scissors to snip off ends. Fry until golden brown, about 4 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack set over a paper towel.
  3. In a small bowl, combine ground cinnamon and remaining 1/2 cup sugar. When churros are cool enough to handle, coat in cinnamon sugar. Serve with chocolate-caramel sauce for dipping.

Come! Fall in love! Like I have!

There is no second option! And if you are someone who doesn’t believe in love, you will start believing in it! These churros won’t let you escape from being seduced into their fantasy and you will be just as helpless as I was!

The whole lot of churros that I made from this recipe was over in just a single day! Neither I nor my hubs could resist ourselves from getting our hands on the next one and the next one and the next… you see the infinite loop? Until all were over! So please beware!

I came to know about churros not too long ago. Frankly, it is not very popular in India yet. The very first time I saw this was on a cooking show on television and then I did my research since it looked very interesting!

The explorer inside me, who is always on the lookout for new recipes, new dishes, new cuisines and cultures, had pushed me to know more about these fascinating thing called churros!

The stories around churros are as captivating as the churros themselves. The cookery show which introduced me with this, informed that the churros are invented by Chinese but now I see it is popular as a Spanish snack and is considered as a traditional Spanish breakfast!

But whoever invented these, my heartfelt gratitude to them for gifting such a wonderful thing to the mankind!

Traditionally churros are deep fried in a flavorless oil but nowadays baked versions are also available. I wanted to get the authentic taste which is why I preferred to fry them.

Will try out the baked ones in next shot as I am sure these churros gonna happen frequently in our home. I don’t know why I didn’t try these earlier and I could not forgive myself for that.

If you want to serve the churros traditionally in the Spanish way, then you can’t skip the chocolate sauce. Also I don’t see why someone would want to skip CHOCHOLATE SAUCE!

If you want to know what’s the meaning of ‘ultimate pleasure’ then you just have to take a bite of churros dipped in the chocolate sauce! You will be enlightened!

Also do not miss the cinnamon sugar shower. That’s a must – must – must! I will still forgive you if you don’t do the chocolate sauce bit but I won’t spare you if you don’t roll your churros in the cinnamon sugar without which churros are actually not churros!


How to Make Disneyland Churro Bites Recipe

For the churros, bring the butter, water, cinnamon and salt to a boil. Remove from heat and add the flour, stirring until if forms a dense ball. Let is sit for 5-7 minutes to cool.

This is the batter after it is all combined. It’s a pretty dense batter

Add eggs one at a time mixing it together. Place the batter in a piping back with a large star tip decorator. Heat the oil in a saucepan. When it is hot enough to fry, squeeze the batter out in 1-2 inch strips, cutting the dough off. Fry 5-6 churro bites at a time. Remove them with a slotted spoon onto a paper towel. While they are still hot, dust them in the sugar an cinnamon mixture. Serve while still warm with a side of dark chocolate sauce and whipped cream. Enjoy! Dig in!
